“Right to Know”: Kharge demands full transparency from the Centre on the US-India trade pact.

Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge has questioned the manner in which the India–US trade agreement was announced, alleging a lack of transparency by the government despite Parliament being in session. He said that neither lawmakers nor the public were adequately informed about the details of the deal.
While defending the agreement in the Lok Sabha, Union Commerce and Industry Minister Piyush Goyal stated that India had safeguarded key domestic interests, particularly in agriculture and dairy, after nearly a year of negotiations. He added that talks began following Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s visit to the United States in February 2025 and described the outcome as balanced and mutually advantageous, with energy security remaining a major priority.
Kharge, however, contrasted the current situation with the Indo–US civil nuclear agreement finalized during the UPA government, highlighting that Parliament had been kept informed throughout that process. He criticized the present government for sharing limited information, noting that the Prime Minister’s response focused mainly on tariff reductions without explaining the broader terms of the deal.
The Congress leader also raised concerns about possible compromises under US pressure, the impact on Indian farmers, and whether agriculture had been opened to American products. Additionally, he sought clarity on India’s energy relations with Russia, especially regarding oil imports. Emphasising accountability, Kharge said Parliament and the people of India deserve complete disclosure of the agreement’s details.
