Mizoram Sets Sights on Olympic Glory with Grassroots Sports Revamp

The Mizoram government is leaving no stone unturned in its quest to produce world-class athletes who can represent India at the Olympic Games. With a renewed focus on grassroots sports development, the state is restructuring its sports ecosystem to identify and nurture talent from a young age, particularly in eight key Olympic disciplines.
Sports Minister Lalnghinglova Hmar is spearheading the initiative, emphasizing the need for a systematic approach to talent development and competitive excellence. “We’re working towards creating a framework that allows our young athletes to flourish and make it big,” he said at the P C Gabriel Lalliansanga Memorial MBA Junior Official Badminton Championship.
The state is focusing on archery, badminton, boxing, hockey, judo, taekwondo, weightlifting, and wrestling – sports where Mizoram has shown promise. Hmar is encouraging young athletes to dream big and aim for Olympic glory, citing the state’s achievements in junior and sub-junior badminton categories as proof of its potential.
The minister also highlighted the broader benefits of sports in shaping young minds and bodies, saying it’s a powerful tool for improving physical and mental well-being. With proper coaching, infrastructure, and training programs in place, Mizoram is poised to scale new heights in sports. The government’s efforts aim to create a sustainable pipeline of talented athletes and strengthen the state’s sporting culture.
