Gas Leakage Near Makum Raises Alarms, Triggers Protest: Students’ Union Demand Accountability From Oil India Limited

Public safety concerns have been raised by a gas leak from an Oil India Limited pipeline near Makum in the Tinsukia district of Assam, which has apparently gone unchecked for the last three days. The impacted pipeline is located next to the Makum-Barekuri connecting route. The strong gas odor in the vicinity and the lack of prompt containment or reaction measures by Oil India Limited authorities have alarmed the locals. Local groups and civic society have sharply criticized the corporation for failing to take visible action to repair the leak or publish public advisories, despite the possible threat to neighboring towns and traffic flow.

The Makum Regional Students’ Union has taken a firm stance, denouncing the company’s delay as “reckless and irresponsible.” The Students’ Union has demanded immediate action to halt the leak and guarantee that future occurrences of this kind are avoided. “Such continuous gas emissions simply pose a threat to human life in addition to the environment as well. As a result, Oil India Limited needs to behave sensibly and responsibly,” a Student Union spokesperson clearly mentioned.

Authorities have not yet made an official announcement about the source of the leak or when it will be fixed.
