Newborns are becoming silent carriers due to liver infections, which are common in babies from birth
India faces a significant burden of viral hepatitis, with nearly 29.8 million people living with Hepatitis B and 5.5 million with Hepatitis C. Over 50,000 new HBV cases are recorded annually, contributing to chronic liver diseases and fatalities. A dangerous transmission route is from mother to child at birth, often undetected until decades later. Up to 90% of infants infected at birth develop chronic Hepatitis B, compared to only 5-10% of adults who become infected later. Strategies such as birth dose vaccination, Hepatitis B Immunoglobulin, and antenatal antivirals can reduce the likelihood of chronic infection.
