Tensions Spike in Indian Ocean as Second Iranian Warship Approaches Sri Lanka After U.S. Sinks Frigate

A major international crisis is unfolding in the Indian Ocean as a second Iranian warship was reported heading toward Sri Lanka on March 5, 2026. This move comes just one day after a U.S. submarine torpedoed and sank the Iranian frigate IRIS Dena off Sri Lanka’s southern coast, resulting in the deaths of 87 sailors. The sunken vessel was reportedly returning from a military exercise in Visakhapatnam, India, when it was attacked in international waters—an act Iran has termed a strike on a “guest of India.”

Sri Lankan authorities are currently managing a delicate diplomatic and humanitarian situation. While 32 rescued Iranian sailors are being treated under tight security in Galle, the Sri Lankan Navy continues to search for others missing at sea. President Anura Kumara Dissanayake is reportedly meeting with top officials to decide whether to grant the second Iranian vessel permission to enter the safety of the island’s territorial waters. Meanwhile, Iran has launched a fresh wave of attacks against U.S. and Israeli bases, vowing that Washington will “bitterly regret” the sinking of its ship as the broader Middle East conflict enters its sixth day and threatens to draw in more regional powers.
