Could Sourav Ganguly serve as the Chief Minister of West Bengal in 2026?

Sourav Ganguly is undoubtedly among the finest players and captains that India has ever produced. He is also, without question, the greatest sportsperson to emerge from West Bengal. In his home state, he is regarded as one of the most significant icons and boasts a legendary fan base. Repeatedly, there have been speculations regarding his potential entry into politics, given his successful tenure as a cricket administrator, including roles as president of the Cricket Association of Bengal and the Board of Control for Cricket in India. Indeed, there have been suggestions that he might even be considered as a candidate for the next chief minister of West Bengal in the upcoming Assembly Elections in 2026.

During an interview with PTI, Ganguly was questioned about his interest in pursuing a political career prior to the 2026 elections, and whether he would find the prospect more appealing if offered the role of the next chief minister of West Bengal. In response, the iconic captain of India firmly declared that he would never entertain any political offers. “I am not interested,” he asserted unequivocally.

Lack of Interest in Politics

Sourav Ganguly was inquired about which political party he would consider joining if he had the option to engage in politics. He expressed that he has no interest in politics and prefers to simply observe the developments. “It’s not as straightforward as you might suggest. I receive the chance (to enter politics) annually, but I do not believe that it aligns with my interests. I have no interest in politics; I merely observe because the advancement of a country and a state is closely linked to the individuals who govern it,” Ganguly remarked.
