Legal Deadlock Ends for Vijay’s Jana Nayagan as Producer Withdraws High Court Petition
The Madras High Court has permitted KVN Productions LLP, the makers of the actor Vijay-starrer Jana Nayagan, to withdraw their writ petition against the Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC). The legal battle began in early January when the producer sought a directive for the immediate issuance of a U/A 16+ certificate to meet a planned January 9 release date. However, after a series of legal turns—including a single-judge order in favor of the producer being stayed by a Division Bench and the Supreme Court refusing to intervene—the production house has opted to stop the litigation and accept the CBFC Chairman’s decision to refer the film to a nine-member revising committee.
This withdrawal clears the path for the CBFC to re-evaluate the movie, which has been delayed for over a month due to concerns regarding its portrayal of the armed forces and potential impacts on social harmony. While the producer had initially carried out suggested cuts for a U/A rating, a complaint from an examining committee member about the lack of military experts during the review led to the current impasse. By agreeing to the revising committee’s oversight, the makers hope to finally secure a certification and set a new release date for the highly anticipated film.
