Kumar Mangalam Birla Takes Helm as Vodafone Idea’s Chairman Amid Govt Relief Package

The Board of Directors of Vodafone Idea (Vi) has appointed Kumar Mangalam Birla as its Non-Executive Chairman. The company informed the Stock Exchange on May 5th that the current Chairman, Ravinder Takkar, expressed his desire to step down, and the company has accepted his decision. Ravinder Takkar will now remain associated with the Board of Directors only as a Non-Executive Director. The news of Birla’s appointment comes at a time when the company has received significant financial relief from the government.
Recently, the Department of Telecommunications (DoT) reduced Vodafone Idea’s Adjusted Gross Revenue (AGR) dues by approximately ₹20,000 crore, leading to a nearly 8% rise in the company’s share price following the news. By reducing the AGR arrears by 27%, the government has provided substantial relief to Vodafone Idea. As of December last year, the arrears amounted to ₹87,695 crore, which has now been reduced to ₹64,046 crore. This decision was taken after a committee from the Department of Telecommunications re-evaluated the outstanding amount. In addition to the reduction in arrears, a 5-year moratorium has also been granted for the repayment of the funds.
