Delhi Police Issue Notices to X Demanding User Data Over Abusive Posts Targeting PM Modi During CJP Protests

Delhi Police’s Cyber and Social Media Monitoring teams have issued formal notices to social media platform X (formerly Twitter) and multiple account holders over allegedly derogatory, defamatory, and abusive content targeting Prime Minister Narendra Modi during the youth-led Cockroach Janta Party (CJP) protests. Law enforcement officials directed the platform to immediately remove the offending posts and videos while demanding comprehensive registrant data—including full names, contact details, email addresses, login-logout timestamps, and IP logs—to support investigations under the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) and the Information Technology Act. The legal action follows intense social media scrutiny during recent student demonstrations over examination paper leaks, where authorities allege that online channels were flooded with crude commentary, AI-generated deepfakes, and misleading narratives. Police revealed that specialized monitoring teams identified hundreds of questionable posts—including over 480 foreign-linked handles allegedly disseminating false information—and instructed intermediaries to preserve relevant digital evidence alongside certificates under Section 63(4) of the Bharatiya Sakshya Adhiniyam. While several objectionable posts have already been taken down, authorities stressed that the notices form part of standard procedural measures to curb unlawful digital communication and maintain public order, even as digital rights advocates and student leaders voice concerns regarding potential overreach on free expression.
