Congress leaders held in Guwahati during protest demanding CEC’s removal

Assam Pradesh Congress Committee (APCC) president Gaurav Gogoi and All India Congress Committee (AICC) secretary Manoj Chauhan, were detained by police during a protest in Guwahati today, demanding demanding the removal of Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar.
The Congress party is demanding the CEC’s resignation over the Election Commission’s handling of the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls.
The protest was organised as part of a nationwide programme directed by the All India Congress Committee (AICC).
Gogoi and other party workers were detained when they tried to march towards the office of the state Chief Electoral Officer at Dispur, raising slogans against Kumar.
The APCC condemned the detention of its leaders and workers and stated that the denial of permission to stage peaceful and democratic protest is yet another threat to democracy.
“The brutality displayed by the police during the demonstration to burn the effigy of Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar—a patron of a Hitlerian regime—is not only deplorable, but also concrete proof of the current government’s miserable failure,” a statement from APCC said.
Among others detained by the police are Seva Dal president Deep Bayan, APCC general secretary Udit Bhanu Das, and party leaders Bidisha Neog, Mousumi Neog, Tazika Parbin, Mainajan Begum, Shantanu Bora, Golam Mustaque Osmani, Ankur Raj Gogoi, and Anwar Hussain, among others.
