Assam Archaeology Department Inspects Flood-Affected Heritage Sites in Sivasagar, Charaideo

A team of senior officials led by Sri Manas Nath, ACS, Commissioner and Secretary of the Indigenous and Tribal Faith and Culture (ITFC) Department, Government of Assam, and Dr. Nabajit Deori, Director-in-Charge of the Directorate of Archaeology, Assam, conducted an on-site inspection of several archaeological sites and monuments affected by the recent floods in Sivasagar and Charaideo districts.
The inspection was carried out from August 11 to 13 to assess the extent of flood-related damage and determine the immediate conservation and restoration measures required to protect the state’s archaeological heritage.
The team, which included Deputy Director Dr. Chabina Hassan and other officials, inspected several important archaeological sites, including Darika Silsakoo and Dijoikona Silsakoo at Garmur, Gorokhiya Doul at Nazira, Piyoli Phukanar Doul at Geleki, Bauli Moidam at Nazira, the Guerrilla Warfare Site at Bhojo, Barbaruah Moidam at Lakuwa, Pohugarh, Haragauri Doul, Fakuwa Doul and Gauri Ballav Devalay at Joysagar, and Molagaon Moidam at Nazira.
Following the inspection, the Directorate of Archaeology, Assam, will immediately initiate preliminary restoration and necessary conservation measures at the affected sites in accordance with prescribed government procedures and conservation protocols.
The severely affected Darika Silsakoo at Garmur, Simaluguri, will be taken up on a priority basis. The Directorate has already completed a detailed inspection and prepared an assessment of the damage, paving the way for restoration work.
It may be recalled that the Director and his team had earlier conducted a preliminary inspection of the affected archaeological sites on July 31 and August 1. A report based on that assessment was subsequently submitted to the higher authorities for necessary action.
The Directorate of Archaeology, Assam, reiterated its commitment to protecting, conserving and preserving the state’s rich archaeological and cultural heritage in the face of natural disasters.
