Assam CM Celebrates Tiwa Community’s Wanchuwa Festival

Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma has extended his heartfelt greetings to the people of the state, especially the Tiwa community, on the occasion of the Wanchuwa Festival, one of the most significant post-harvest celebrations of the indigenous Tiwa people.

In his message, the Chief Minister described Wanchuwa as a vibrant celebration of a successful harvest, community unity and gratitude towards nature. He said the festival reflects the rich cultural heritage of Assam and highlights the enduring traditions of the Tiwa community.

Traditionally celebrated by the Tiwa, or Lalung, community in parts of Karbi Anglong, the Wanchuwa Festival is observed once every five to six years between June and August. The festival features traditional music and dance performances, ceremonial rice-pounding rituals, and the preparation of wanrusa, a steamed rice cake offered to community deities as a symbol of thanksgiving, prosperity and well-being.

The Chief Minister also reaffirmed the Assam Government’s commitment to preserving and promoting the customs, traditions and cultural heritage of the state’s indigenous communities. He said the Indigenous and Tribal Faith and Culture Department continues to work towards safeguarding Assam’s diverse cultural legacy while ensuring that these traditions are passed on to future generations.

The state government believes that protecting indigenous festivals such as Wanchuwa not only strengthens cultural identity but also promotes unity, inclusiveness and respect for Assam’s rich and diverse heritage.
