BJP Govt’s Land Grab in Assam Sparks Fury Among Indigenous Communities
Out of this, 78% of the population belongs to the Tiwa community, and the remaining 22% consists of Bodo, Karbi, and Scheduled Caste communities. In order to keep Himanta Biswa Sarma’s BJP government in power for a second term, the local public has registered a strong protest against the decision to evict people from thousands of bighas of land in Bhumipuri for the sake of the satellite township. CPI(M) has announced its stance in support of the public’s protest demanding the cancellation of the satellite township project decision. The party states—Himanta Biswa Sarma-led BJP government is merely staging a drama of loving indigenous people. On the other hand, they are using highly cunning tactics to hand over indigenous land to corporate giants like Adani, ruining the existence of the indigenous sons of the soil. They have launched an eviction drive to grab land in Karbi Anglong, Dima Hasao, Batadrava, Bordowa, and Satdolong hill areas. The party has cast a deep shadow of grief over the region. After allocating thousands of bighas of land under the names of solar power projects, cement factories, etc., the evil conspiracy to evict the Tiwa community from their own lands for the sake of Adani-Ambani has now forced the BJP government to face public outrage. Although the government has currently put the decision regarding the proposed satellite township at Jagiroad on hold due to public resistance, it has not officially canceled the notification.
CPI(M) State Secretary Bibek Das stated that bringing the BJP back to power does not mean giving them a license to evict citizens of Assam. The party has called upon the public to build a united protest against this anti-tribal and anti-people decision, which is being carried out in the name of so-called development while actually looting indigenous interests.
