Centenary Celebrations Begin at Cotton University’s Department of Botany

The Department of Botany at Cotton University has begun its centenary celebrations, marking 100 years since its establishment in 1927. The inaugural programme was held on Wednesday, beginning a series of events planned ahead of the department’s centenary milestone in 2027.

Former Gauhati University Vice-Chancellor Professor Amarjyoti Choudhury delivered the inaugural centenary address, highlighting the academic contributions and achievements of the department over the decades. Cotton University Vice-Chancellor Professor Ramesh Chandra Deka praised the vision of the department’s founder, Professor A.C. Dutta, and acknowledged the dedication of generations of teachers, researchers, students and alumni who have contributed to building its legacy.

The celebration featured several activities, including flag hoisting, a tree plantation drive, the lighting of the ceremonial lamp and a special felicitation programme honouring distinguished alumni above 80 years of age and retired teachers above 70 years. ASTEC Director Dr. Jaideep Baruah also highlighted the collaborative achievements between ASTEC and the Department of Botany.

The programme concluded with a vote of thanks and an interactive session among participants. The centenary celebrations will continue with a series of academic and cultural programmes, leading up to the department’s 100-year milestone in 2027, celebrating its rich history, research contributions and continued commitment to botanical sciences.
