Guwahati Struggles With Artificial Flooding After Brief but Intense Rainfall

A heavy spell of evening rain brought large parts of Guwahati to a standstill on Wednesday, causing severe waterlogging, traffic disruptions and renewed concerns over the city’s recurring artificial flooding problem.

Several areas, including Hatigaon, Beltola, Rukminigaon, Zoo Road, Chandmari, Maligaon, Kahilipara Road and West Boragaon, reported severe water accumulation after the rainfall. Many roads remained submerged for hours, affecting vehicular movement and leaving thousands of commuters stranded in long traffic jams.

Beltola Survey was among the worst-affected areas, where several vehicles were trapped due to stagnant water. Residents complained that floodwaters continued to remain in the locality even after the rain stopped, raising questions over the effectiveness of existing drainage systems.

The situation was particularly difficult in Maligaon, where rainwater entered shops and commercial establishments. Several business owners reported damage to goods and temporary suspension of operations as they struggled to protect their belongings from the rising water.

The latest incident has once again highlighted Guwahati’s long-standing drainage challenges and the city’s vulnerability to waterlogging during heavy rainfall. Residents have urged authorities to take permanent measures to improve drainage infrastructure and prevent repeated disruptions during the monsoon season.
