Manipuri Cinema Shines as ‘Sunita’ Bags National Film Award

Manipuri feature film Sunita has won the Best Manipuri Feature Film award at the 72nd National Film Awards, with director Ajit Yumnam and producer Yumnam Brojen Singh receiving the honour from President Droupadi Murmu at a ceremony held in Ekta Nagar, Gujarat, on September 22. The film focuses on a visually impaired woman and her journey towards education, independence and dignity. Lead actor Naramada Sougaijam and supporting actor Binita Yumnam represented the film at the ceremony. Speaking after the event, Sougaijam said she was pleased that her performance had contributed to the film’s recognition and expressed her commitment to promoting Manipuri cinema. She also highlighted the talent of filmmakers and writers in Manipur who can compete with other regional film industries. President Murmu congratulated the award recipients and highlighted initiatives by the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting to promote regional cinema. Manipur also had representation on the National Film Awards jury, with documentary filmmaker James Khangenbam serving on the Central Jury for the Non-Feature Film Category and filmmaker Thokchom Jimmy on the Eastern Panel for the Feature Film Category. The award marks another recognition for Manipuri cinema on the national stage.
