Meghalaya Athletes Showcase Physical and Mental Grit in Arunachal Pradesh

A diverse contingent of nearly 60 runners from Meghalaya made a remarkable impression at the high-altitude Oil India Tawang Marathon 2026, showcasing the state’s growing prowess and passion for extreme endurance running. Flagged off in Arunachal Pradesh by Tourism Minister Pasang Dorjee Sona alongside actor Amit Sial, the prestigious Eastern Himalayan event attracted participants from across the globe. However, it was the exceptional diversity of Meghalaya’s team—comprising first-time runners, dedicated frontline law enforcement personnel, and inspirational senior citizens—that truly captured the spotlight. Leading the frontline runners was 29-year-old Edward Sungoh, who leveraged his previous experience at the high-altitude Ladakh Marathon to navigate the challenging mountain terrain, using his platform to urge the state’s youth to cultivate the physical strength and mental fortitude required for demanding athletic endeavors. Representing the state’s emergency services, 54-year-old Badon Sing Tham of the Meghalaya Police Fire Service proudly completed his race, expressing deep honor in bringing visibility to the police force on a prominent national stage. The contingent’s collective determination spanned all age groups and skill levels, from newcomer Larri, who successfully tackled the 5-km category, to an inspiring couple over the age of 60 whose successful completion demonstrated that age is no barrier to fitness and endurance. By successfully conquering the formidable Himalayan course, Meghalaya’s runners firmly established their state’s athletic resilience, demonstrating community pride, intergenerational health, and an undeniable spirit of sportsmanship.
