Two Bodies Recovered from Silt as Residents Return to Flood-Hit Sivasagar Village

As floodwaters continued to recede in Assam, a tragic scene unfolded in Nepalikhuti village of Sivasagar district after two bodies were found buried beneath thick layers of silt left behind by the recent deluge.

The grim discovery was made when villagers, who had returned to inspect the damage and clean their homes, began removing mud and debris deposited by the floodwaters. During the cleanup, they found two bodies concealed beneath accumulated sediment.

According to local residents, one body was located near the riverbank, with only the legs visible above the silt, while the rest of the body remained buried. The second body was discovered under a heavy layer of mud near the residence of Sonu Karmarkar.

“We returned to our village today to clean our homes after the floods. While clearing the mud, we found two dead bodies. We immediately informed the Gaonburha and the police,” a resident said.

Another villager said one of the deceased is suspected to be the wife of Rajen Panika, although officials have not yet confirmed the identity.

Police and district authorities reached the spot after being informed. The bodies are expected to be recovered and sent for post-mortem examination, while officials work to establish the identities of the deceased.

Nepalikhuti was among the worst-affected villages in Upper Assam during the recent floods. The inundation forced residents to flee, leaving homes submerged for days. Although the floodwaters have now receded, thick deposits of mud continue to hamper recovery efforts, and villagers fear that more victims could still be trapped beneath the accumulated silt.
