Assam Takes a Leap Forward: Agarwood Chips Find Way to Saudi Arabia and UAE, Paving Path for Lucrative Exports
In a significant boost to Assam’s agro-forest economy, the state has achieved a milestone with the export of its first consignment of agarwood chips to Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates. This landmark export, which has secured all necessary statutory clearances including a CITES permit and a restricted export licence from the Directorate General of Foreign Trade, marks the beginning of a new chapter for an industry with immense global demand and revenue potential.
The consignment, comprising 100 kg of agarwood chips destined for Saudi Arabia and 12 kg bound for the UAE, was dispatched from the cargo terminal of the Lokpriya Gopinath Bordoloi International Airport, signifying Assam’s entry into the global agarwood market.
Highly prized for its distinctive aroma, agarwood, also known as Oud, is a valuable raw material used in the production of luxury perfumes, incense, cosmetics, and traditional products across the Gulf, Europe, and Southeast Asia. This export is expected to unlock vast opportunities for Assam’s agarwood industry, with the state poised to tap into the lucrative global market.
