OpenAI is recruiting for one of the thorniest safety problems in artificial intelligence: how to anticipate and manage the risks that emerge if an AI system reaches the point where it can recursively upgrade its own capabilities.
A new job listing, first reported by Business Insider, seeks a researcher for the company’s Preparedness team — the unit tasked with identifying and mitigating catastrophic risks from advanced AI models. The position comes with a compensation band of $295,000 to $445,000 per year, or roughly ₹2.5 crore to ₹3.7 crore, placing it among the higher-paying technical roles in the AI safety space.
What makes the posting stand out isn’t just the salary. The role description emphasizes a rare hiring requirement: the ability to reason through problems that don’t yet exist.
“This work relies on reasoning about problems that might exist in the future, but might not exist now,” the listing states, as quoted by Business Insider. “So it’s especially important that people in this role are tasteful and strategic.”
In other words, OpenAI wants researchers who can think ahead of the curve — anticipating failure modes, misuse scenarios, and safety gaps that could arise if models become capable of self-directed improvement. This concept, often called “recursive self-improvement” or “intelligence explosion,” is considered a key inflection point in AI development. If a system can rewrite its own code or design better versions of itself without human intervention, control and alignment become far harder problems.
The Preparedness team’s mandate is to stress-test frontier models before release, run evaluations for dangerous capabilities, and build safeguards against worst-case outcomes. Hiring for “tasteful and strategic” judgment signals that OpenAI sees technical skill alone as insufficient. The researcher must also decide which hypotheticals are worth preparing for, and how to prioritize work when the future risk landscape is uncertain.
