Assam-Mizoram Border Tension Resurfaces in Sribhumi Over Land Claim

Tension has resurfaced along the Assam-Mizoram border in Sribhumi district after a group of people from Mizoram allegedly entered nearly two kilometres into Assam and claimed the area as part of Mizoram.

The incident was reported from West Kalagang under the Ramkrishnanagar subdivision, where the group allegedly prevented a local resident from constructing a house on the disputed land.

Following the incident, Assam administration and police officials visited the area to assess the situation. Ramkrishnanagar Sub-Divisional Circle Officer Antara Pal and Jatrabari Police Station Officer-in-Charge Chittaranjan Bora, accompanied by police personnel, reached the spot.

Subsequently, Assam officials held discussions with the Officer-in-Charge of Kanmun Police Station in Mizoram’s Mamit district. The meeting focused on preventing the situation from escalating and maintaining peace along the inter-state boundary.

As an interim measure, both sides agreed to maintain the existing status quo in the disputed area. Until the land dispute is resolved, neither side will allow the construction of new houses or other structures there.

The latest development has once again raised concerns among residents of West Kalagang and neighbouring areas, where disputes over boundary demarcation, land surveys and possession have reportedly occurred repeatedly.

The disputed stretch is located near the Singla Forest Reserve under the Cheragi Range, which has long been regarded as a sensitive section of the Assam-Mizoram border.

The two states had earlier held several rounds of discussions over alleged encroachment in the Soru Bhirband area in 2020. However, local residents claim that those discussions failed to produce a permanent settlement. Another land-related dispute later emerged near West Kalagang LP School over the measurement of land.

With fresh claims now emerging in the same region, residents are demanding a clear and permanent demarcation of the inter-state boundary to prevent repeated confrontations.

The Assam-Mizoram border has a history of serious conflict. On July 26, 2021, six Assam Police personnel were killed during a violent confrontation between the police forces of the two states at the Lailapur border in Cachar district.

Against this backdrop, the latest dispute is being closely monitored by both state administrations. Although the situation in West Kalagang remains peaceful following the intervention of officials, residents fear that unresolved issues relating to land ownership and boundary demarcation could lead to renewed tensions in the future.
